A story by Sonny Lanning

How Much Would You Risk To Save Someone

A spacewalk becomes a fight for survival when a collision damages the station and leaves an astronaut isolated behind a damaged airlock. Safety is close enough to understand, but no longer simple to reach. Between her and the crew is a problem that cannot be solved by opening a door. Bringing her inside could put everyone on the station at risk.

Her crewmates want to save her. Mission Control wants to bring her home. She wants to keep breathing long enough for them to find a way. There is no shortage of knowledge or determination, but every possible action must be measured against the damage and the danger to those still protected inside. Her remaining oxygen sets a deadline none of them can negotiate.

As the rescue effort tightens, the astronaut's own judgement becomes as important as the expertise on either side of the airlock. She is the person most exposed to the consequences of every proposal, and the person with the least time to wait. Survival depends on people working together while facing different versions of the same emergency: a colleague outside, a crew at risk, a life measured in breath.

From a distance, priorities can look clear. Up close, they have a face. The crew must confront what an acceptable risk means when the person who needs their help is still there to look them in the eye. Mission Control must pursue a rescue that cannot be allowed to become another catastrophe.

Airlock is a contained space survival thriller about ingenuity, trust and the limits of a shared determination to save one life. The obstacle is not a lack of care. It is a damaged station, a dwindling supply of oxygen, and the terrible difficulty of finding a safe way home when home is just beyond reach.
