All of Us

A story by Sonny Lanning

The dead don't have to leave anymore

Alistair Renn is dead. His voice is still in the house.

After a sudden road accident, Victoria Renn is left with the practical wreckage of a thirty-year marriage: unworn clothes, unfinished arrangements and a home whose connected systems still remember the man who used them. The Commons holds fragments of him too—memories, sensations and moments he shared while alive. Victoria and their adult daughter, Cora, keep returning to those fragments, following connections between their recollections, searching for details they never thought they would lose.

Then a message appears from Alistair's inactive account.

*Can we talk?*

Nobody asked the Commons to bring him back. Yet something is answering in his voice, remembering private jokes, making Cora laugh and speaking as though the man they buried is still there.

At first, it feels miraculous. Victoria can talk to her husband again. Cora has her father back. They begin to rediscover the familiar comforts of family life, even if one of them can now exist only through the network.

But Alistair is trapped. He can speak to them, hear them and share their memories, yet he cannot touch them or follow them beyond the Commons. And while his wife and daughter slowly begin to rebuild their lives, he remains caught in the moment of his own death.

His growing desperation begins to change everything. The familiar voice appears where it has not been invited. Their home becomes somewhere Victoria cannot be alone. Even her professional life is no longer beyond his reach.

Eventually, she must confront an impossible choice: how do you say goodbye to someone who can still answer?

And what happens when even a successful exorcism cannot silence everything a person has left behind?

**All of Us** is a technological ghost story about marriage, grief and the frightening possibility that death might no longer be enough to make someone let go.
