Dead Air

A story by Sonny Lanning

Hold the line caller

The overnight shift becomes a trap when a lockdown leaves a radio presenter confined to her studio. The world outside is reduced to the voices that can still reach her. Then the callers begin describing events before they happen. At first the predictions are small enough to test. When they prove accurate, the possibility of dismissing them begins to disappear.

Knowing what comes next should be an advantage. Instead, different callers start reporting different futures. Each wants her to do something. Each has a reason why its version deserves belief. The calls turn the present into a contest over choices she has yet to make, and information that once looked like a warning begins to resemble an attempt to take control.

One time keeps recurring: 4:13. That is when she is supposed to die. The repeated detail gives shape to the danger without explaining how to escape it. If a caller knows her future, that knowledge might save her. It might also be exactly what makes the caller dangerous. She cannot assume that someone describing her death is trying to prevent it.

As the hour approaches, the differences between the accounts become as important as their accuracy. Is there one future being described badly, or several possible futures competing to happen? Do her decisions change what the callers know? With no reliable vantage point beyond the studio, she must judge intentions through voices that may understand more about her next move than she does herself.

Dead Air is a thriller about trust when foreknowledge becomes a weapon. A woman whose work depends on listening must decide when to stop believing what she hears. Somewhere among the warnings, instructions and incompatible promises may be a way to survive—if choosing it does not help bring about the death she has been told to fear.
