Cassius Brown And The Nine Cauldrons
For centuries, the Nine Cauldrons were among the most powerful symbols of imperial authority in China. According to legend, the great bronze vessels represented the Nine Provinces and the divine right to rule. Dynasties rose and fell, emperors searched for them, and historians argued over their fate. Then, more than two thousand years ago, the Nine Cauldrons vanished.
No one has seen them since.
When a bronze fragment seized during an international antiquities-trafficking investigation is brought to the attention of archaeologist Dr Cassius Brown, he is immediately suspicious. Its ownership history is riddled with inconsistencies, and its supposed connection to one of history's greatest lost treasures seems almost too convenient.
But in China, Dr Lin Yue has been studying a different mystery: contradictory records from the final years of the Zhou dynasty. While some accounts suggest the Nine Cauldrons passed into the hands of the conquering Qin, others describe their mysterious disappearance. Lin believes the truth may have been deliberately concealed.
When their separate investigations converge, Cassius and Lin uncover evidence of a secret struggle among the ancient custodians of the collection. What began as an attempt to preserve the most sacred treasures of a dying dynasty may have become something altogether more complicated.
Their search takes them from ancient royal sites around Luoyang to the historic mountain passes of western China, the shifting river landscapes of the east, and eventually the remote heights of the Qinling Mountains. Along the way, buried structures, lost transport routes and inscriptions unseen for millennia begin to reveal an extraordinary story.
But the deeper they investigate, the more troubling the evidence becomes.
The Nine Cauldrons may have represented far more than political authority. Their original purpose appears connected to an ancient understanding of the land and its waterways, and engineer Liang Wenhao believes the knowledge they preserve could have profound consequences for communities threatened by catastrophic flooding.
As the search approaches its conclusion, Cassius must confront a possibility that challenges everything he understands about the ancient world.
Some legends may have begun with something real.
And some discoveries may be better left undisturbed.
**The Nine Cauldrons** is the fourth Cassius Brown adventure, combining historical mystery, archaeological discovery and high-stakes adventure in a search for one of China's greatest lost treasures.
