Three Minutes Behind

A story by Sonny Lanning

It's not paranoia if you're being followed.

The photographs show Nadia in moments she has only just lived. Each was taken three minutes before it arrives. Someone is nearby, observing her closely enough to keep producing evidence of their presence without allowing her to understand who they are. The delay is short enough to make the attention immediate and long enough to leave the person behind it out of reach.

A stalker is the obvious explanation. The images make ordinary surroundings feel exposed, turning the recent past into proof that someone has been there with her. Yet the messages begin to carry something more difficult to interpret. They warn her about danger. The person violating her privacy may also be drawing her attention to threats she would otherwise fail to recognise.

That possibility complicates every response. Accepting help from an unseen observer means granting some degree of trust to someone who has given her good reason to be afraid. Rejecting the warnings may mean ignoring information she needs to survive. Nadia cannot judge the sender's intentions simply by the way the contact feels, but she cannot afford to treat useful information as proof of goodwill either.

Following the trail draws her back towards an investigation abandoned eight years earlier. The past offers a context for what is happening now, while the photographs keep the danger close to the present. Understanding why she is being watched requires looking beyond the person holding the camera to whatever has made her worth watching in the first place.

Three Minutes Behind is a thriller about the uneasy boundary between surveillance and protection. Nadia must work out what the images reveal, what their sender wants and how an unfinished investigation has reached back into her life. Someone is following her. The difficult part is deciding whether that is the danger she needs to escape—or the reason she still has a chance.
