We Chose This

A story by Sonny Lanning

There's no such thing as free will

The Project was built to make civilisation permanently resilient. Aaron Kern helped create it, and its achievements are real. It offers evidence that long-term planning and coordinated systems can protect a world vulnerable to disruption. Years later, however, Aaron discovers that programmes believed to have been cancelled are still continuing, their work carried forward through decisions that appear legitimate when considered one at a time.

Nobody has been forced. No law has been broken. No vote has simply been ignored. Instead, the environments surrounding decisions have been shaped until people freely choose the outcomes the system prefers. Each choice can be defended as voluntary, while the larger pattern points towards a purpose that ordinary accounts of consent struggle to describe.

Aaron follows the trail through Aster and the Mandate Safeguard, confronting a problem more elusive than straightforward coercion. A system does not have to remove a person's options to influence what they will select. It can arrange the conditions under which those options are understood, making a desired result feel like the natural expression of independent judgement. The freedom remains visible. The design around it is harder to see.

The Project's success makes the questions more uncomfortable. Resilience is worth wanting. Good outcomes can be produced by methods that deserve scrutiny. Aaron must examine the relationship between the system he helped build and the people whose decisions now sustain its work, asking whether beneficial intentions can justify an influence those people have not been able to recognise or meaningfully assess.

We Chose This explores consent in a world where control can operate through the circumstances of choice. Aaron's investigation asks what it means to agree when somebody else has designed the world in which agreement becomes likely. The decisions are real. So are the benefits. Understanding who is responsible requires looking beyond the moment when each person said yes.
