Year of a Million Truths
It doesn't take long to destroy trust
Leila Voss is investigating a historical record with the support every careful enquiry hopes to find. The documents appear authentic. Witnesses and sources corroborate one another without obvious dependence. Each piece strengthens the account assembled from the others. There seems little reason to distrust a story supported by so many genuine traces—until the corroboration begins to look too complete.
The problem is not a simple forgery. Someone has found a stronger way to manufacture belief: cause real events that produce honest evidence in different places. A document can accurately record what happened. A witness can truthfully describe what they saw. Put together, those reliable fragments can be made to establish a larger narrative that was designed rather than discovered.
For Leila, ordinary methods of verification no longer settle the central question. Proving that a source is genuine cannot reveal why the event behind it occurred. Establishing independence between witnesses cannot show whether the circumstances they witnessed were arranged to support the same false account. The individual facts hold up, which is precisely what makes their combined effect so difficult to challenge.
What begins as a historical investigation becomes a live intelligence crisis. The method is not confined to a record of things already finished. It can shape what people believe now by generating the evidence on which their confidence will depend. Leila must understand a system capable of making a false story persuasive without requiring the people who supply its proof to tell a lie.
Year of a Million Truths is a thriller about the construction of credibility and the limits of checking facts one at a time. Leila faces an adversary whose strongest protection is the honesty of the evidence itself. To discover what is being done, she must look beyond whether each fact is true and ask who arranged for all those truths to tell the same story.
